FAQ

EIFS is the acronym for Exterior Insulation and Finishing Systems
Exterior Insulation and Finishing System (EIFS) is a non-load bearing, exterior wall cladding system that consists of an insulation board attached either adhesively or mechanically, or both, to the substrate; an integrally reinforced base coat; and a textured protective finish coat.
– A water-resistive barrier (WRB) that covers the substrate
– An insulation board, made from expanded ploystyrene (EPS) foam, is attached to the substrate either with an adhesive or mechanically
– A water resistant base coat is applied on top of the EPS Foam.
– A fiber glass reinforcing mesh is embedded into the base coat
– A crack resistant acrylic finish coat in the specified colour and texture by the customer is applied over the base coat
Yes, most EIFS houses can be painted over with acrylic house paint as the finish coat is made of pure acrylic. However, some finish coats may have additives that make it difficult to paint as the paint might not effectively stick to it. It’s best to contact the manufacturer of your finish coat or your contractor to get a better idea of what works and what doesn’t
An expert in the field and quality materials can make EIFS last the life time of a building with the proper maintenance! The first EIFS installations were done in the late 1960’s and most are still in service today.
Unless you’re a professional, it’s highly advised to hire an EIFS contractor. A reputable contractor will have all the necessary tools, materials, insurance and warranty that can actually save you more money than if you were to take on the job yourself. You might even damage the EIFS further, which can be very costly.
